How to protect granite countertops

Granite countertops are popular choice for new kitchens and kitchen retrofits. They are durable, attractive, and can be used in different shades to complement your kitchen's color scheme. Although it is very durable, granite is still susceptible to all kinds of damage without proper protection. Learning how to protect granite countertops will make you keep it beautiful for years.

1.Make sure your cabinet can withstand the weight of granite. The first step in protecting your granite countertops is to ensure that the installation is safe and secure. Due to the weight of the granite, your cabinet requires a sturdy structure and is fastened to the wall. Otherwise, the cabinet may collapse partially, causing the granite to break when it falls. If you are unsure, a licensed contractor can evaluate the strength of your cabinet.

2.Clean the counter after every meal. The next important step to prevent discoloration is to clean up the leak. This is especially true for dark-coloured liquids, such as red wine, on lighter granite. Lighter granite absorbs stains more easily.

3.Avoid placing the container directly on the granite countertop. Containers such as olive oil bottles are often difficult to keep completely dry, acetone extracted from nail polish can remove your sealant, cosmetic and cosmetic supplements may contain chemical residues that will react with your counter over time. Place these types of containers on a shelf or in a cupboard.

To test whether your granite requires sealants, you need water, lemon, baby oil and samples of your stone. Lemon juice will permanently damage the stone containing calcite.

Use this test only on stone samples that you do not care about.
